workplace.calm, inc. is a
unique multi-disciplinary group of consultants specializing in conflict
resolution, violence prevention, and in managing workplace occurrences.
The consultants at workplace.calm, inc.
combine training and experience in assisting workplaces to prevent and
resolve conflict, of any scale, in the most cost effective and expedient
way. The workplace.calm, inc. team can
identify and resolve a number of workplace difficulties and provide
education and consultation, assessment, incident debriefing, and crisis
intervention.
FORENSIC PSYCHIATRIC TEAM
Dr. HY BLOOM, B.A., LL.B., M.D., F.R.C.P.(C) is a
director of workplace.calm, inc., consultants
in Workplace Conflict and Violence Prevention and Management, and is an
associate of the Central Branch of the PSILEX Group, Consultants in
Behavioural Sciences and the Law. He is also a part-time staff member of
the Law and Mental Health Program of the Centre for Addiction and Mental
Health (CAMH) in Toronto, an Assistant Professor in the Department of
Medicine at the University of Toronto, an Assistant Clinical Professor
in the Department of Psychiatry at McMaster University, and an Adjunct
Faculty Member in the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Bloom received his LL.B. from McGill University
in 1978, and was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1978. He obtained
his M.D. from McMaster University in 1984, his Fellowship in
Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in 1989,
and his Fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry from the University of
Toronto in 1990.
He has published extensively on a number of topics in
psychiatry and the law. His most recent books include Mental
Disorder and the Law: A Primer for Legal and Mental Health
Professionals (Toronto:
Irwin Law
2006), Mental Health Courts: Decriminalizing the Mentally Ill
(Toronto: Irwin
Law 2007), and Essential Writings in Violence Risk Assessment
and Management (Toronto:
CAMH 2007). He and a colleague are in the process of editing
a book entitled A Comprehensive and Practical Approach to Mental Disorder and the Law forthcoming from Irwin Law.
Dr. Bloom is an Alternate Chairperson of the Ontario Review Board (ORB), and serves as the ORB’s Psychiatric Resources Coordinator. He is also a psychiatric member and Alternate Chairperson of the Nunavut Review Board, and on the Chair of the Child Psychotherapy Foundation of Canada
He has served as a psychiatric consultant to a number of public and private sector organizations on the subject of workplace conflict and violence, and has lectured and written on the topic. Dr. Bloom is lead author on two first-of-their-kind tools for assessing a worker’s potential for violence in the workplace (the Employee Risk Assessment-20 (ERA-20)), and assessing the workplace for systemic risk (the Workplace Risk Assessment-20 (WRA-20)), respectively. More recently, in 2008, Dr. Bloom was appointed to the Mental Health and the Law Advisory Committee of the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

DEREK PALLANDI, M.D., F.R.C.P.(C)., is a medical practitioner in the province of Ontario and has been qualified as a specialist in the field of psychiatry since 2000. He sub-specializes exclusively in the area of Forensic Psychiatry, a branch of psychiatry that provides consultation and expertise in the assessment and treatment when concurrent mental health and legal issues exist. In addition to being a consultant to workplace.calm, inc. and a private practice forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Pallandi occupies a number of positions, namely he is a Staff Forensic Psychiatrist with the Law and Mental Health Programme at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, a consultant Forensic Psychiatrist at the Oak Ridge Division of the Mental Health Centre Penetanguishene, a consultant to Toronto’s Mental Health Court at Old City Hall, a consultant to the Probation and Parole Service of the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, a Medical member of both the Consent and Capacity Board and Ontario Review Board, and an Investigative Coroner for Toronto East. He holds the rank of lecturer with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto.

Jonathan Rootenberg, B.Sc., M.D., F.R.C.P.(C.), D.A.B.P.N., is a qualified medical practitioner licensed to practice medicine in Ontario, as well as in Michigan, since 1993. As a psychiatric specialist, he is board-certified in both Canada and the United States. Additionally, he has completed a subspecialty in Forensic Psychiatry, the interface between psychiatry and the law, with added board certification therein. In addition to being a workplace.calm, inc. consultant, Dr. Rootenberg currently holds a faculty position with the University of Toronto in the Department of Psychiatry, is affiliated with CAMH as a Staff Psychiatrist in the Law and Mental Health Program, and as a Consultant in the Sexual Behaviour, Workplace Violence, and Psychological Trauma Clinics. From January 1996 until January 2007, he served as the Clinical Head of the Forensic Assessment Unit at Whitby Mental Health Centre. He is also a Psychiatric Member of the Ontario Review Board and of the Consent and Capacity Board. Since obtaining his medical license in Ontario in 1993, he has maintained a private practice where he assesses, diagnoses, and treats a broad spectrum of psychiatric disorders.

PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT
MINI
MAMAK, Ed.D., C.Psych, is a consultant at workplace.calm, inc. She is the Senior Psychologist at the St. Joseph’s Healthcare, Centre for Mountain Health Services, Forensic Service and the Co-director of their Aggression Clinic and Research Centre. Dr. Mamak is an Assistant Professor with the Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences Program at McMaster University. She is also a member of the board of advisory for the Canadian Critical Incident Association and a member of the Ontario Review Board. Dr. Mamak routinely consults with local and international police agencies and has been a sought after lecturer in the area of hostage negotiations and risk assessment. She has consulted with various private and public sector organizations in the areas of hostage negotiations, violent offending, and risk prediction.

JENIFER
MULOCK, B.A., M.A., Psychology, is an associate with workplace.calm, inc. Jenifer holds a Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She received her honours undergraduate degree in Psychology from Queen’s University in 1997. Jenifer also completed a program of study in Psychology at Ryerson University where she was a recipient of the J.L. Beaton Scholarship award. Jenifer’s experience includes working in both forensic and correctional settings. She currently provides psychological assessments and treatment for federal offenders. Jenifer’s research interests include working on a problem gambling study at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, as well as assisting with research on Fitness to Stand Trial Assessments in Canada. Previous research projects include, Evidence-Based Practices in Forensic Psychology, Suicidal Motivations and Manifestations, and Organized versus Disorganized Sexual Homicide. Jenifer’s open-minded, detail-oriented and investigative approach to workplace difficulties of all kinds has quickly made her a valued member of the multidisciplinary team at workplace.calm,inc. workplace.calm, inc..

ADDICTION MEDICINE
Dr. Jacob (Jake) Bobrowski, B.Sc., M.D., F.A.A.F.P., C.C.S.A.M., F.A.S.A.M.,, is trained as a family physician and addictions specialist. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Bobrowski obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1977, and qualified to practice medicine in 1978. His clinical practice, research, and academic activities have principally been in the area of addictions. He has lectured extensively in that area. He has held and continues to hold a number of consulting and administrative positions related to his expertise in the field of addictions.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND ORGANIZATIONAL INTERVENTION
RESA. S. EISEN, M.S.W., R.S.W. is a director of workplace.calm, inc.,
consultants in Workplace Conflict and Violence Prevention and Management. Resa
obtained her Masters Degree in Social Work in 1976. Her focus on dispute
resolution began early in her career as a social worker at the Family Court
Clinic in Toronto, where she conducted custody and access assessments for the
Provincial Court of Ontario. She went into private practice in 1982,
specializing in assessments and mediation. She later expanded her mediation
practice to focus on the resolution of conflict in the workplace.
As a director of workplace.calm, inc., she continues
to evolve her work in the area of conflict-resolution and mediation of complex
workplace interpersonal situations. As a consultant to public and private sector
organizations, Resa has mediated or facilitated the resolution of many workplace
impasses.
She is a co-author of the Workplace Risk Assessment-20 (WRA-20), a tool designed
to assess risk in the workplace, and the Employee Risk Assessment-20 (ERA-20), a
tool designed to assess risk for violence in a potential workplace violence
perpetrator.
Resa has been an instructor of mediation at the University of Toronto, School of
Continuing Studies, and has provided ADR and Mediation Skills Training to a wide
variety of organizations in both the private and public sectors. She recently
co-designed a family mediation course at Trent University. Resa has been
particularly active in designing and implementing training programs to
government agencies who are adopting mediation as one of their central dispute
resolution processes. She designed the Settlement Conference Process for Legal
Aid Ontario, and implemented a program of conflict resolution for Area Directors
and lawyers throughout the province.
Resa continues her practice as a marriage and family therapist. She is a member
of the Ontario Association of Professional Social Workers, and is a certified
member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
CHRISTOPHER D. WEBSTER,
Ph.D., FRSC, C.Psych. received his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Dalhousie University in 1967. After a few years as a Research Scientist at the then Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto, he moved to the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry and coordinated research and clinical programs for children with severe developmental and conduct problems. In 1975 he was appointed Professor and Director of the School of Child and Youth Care at the University of Victoria. Returning to Toronto in 1977, he was again appointed a Research Scientist at the Clarke Institute and also Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Criminology. It was during this period that he developed an interest in forensic mental health, with emphasis on violence risk assessment and treatment. He was as well Head of Psychology at the Institute between 1986 and 1992. In 1993, he was appointed Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology, Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia. In addition to several books and numerous articles, he has, in recent years, published with colleagues in Vancouver and Toronto a number of practical manuals for use by mental health and correctional practitioners that focus on the broad-based screening of violence (HCR-20), sex offenders (SVR-20), aggressive children under 12 years old (EARL-20B, EARL-21G) and the Short Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability (START). The approach underlying these manuals has been to draw clinicians and researchers together in order to establish guides that are scientifically defensible and based on sound professional practice. Since 1997 he has developed an international research and training consulting practice in the area of risk assessment and management. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association, and the Royal Society of Canada.
At Simon Fraser University he is Professor Emeritus of Psychology, and at the University of Toronto, he is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry. He is a Senior Research Consultant at workplace.calm, inc. With Hy Bloom and others, he has published the Workplace Risk Assessment-20 (WRA-20) and the Employee Risk Assesssment-20 (ERA-20) guides. His latest book (with Stephen Hucker) is Violence risk assessment and management (UK: Wiley, 2007) and his latest edited book (with Hy Bloom) is Essential Writings in Violence Risk Assessment and Management (Toronto: Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, 2007).
