DESCRIPTION AND EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

While it is true that some people are natural-born leaders, leadership is, for the most part, an acquired and cultivated skill.

Effective leadership is a central pillar of a well-functioning and harmonious workplace. Supervisors and managers lead by example (modeling), but they also lead by understanding the needs of workers.

Supervisors and managers who are respectful of and attentive to the requirements of workers, and are able to guide them by listening and offering direction, will, in so doing, promote an atmosphere of respect. An environment in which workers can perform their work to their utmost, feel valued, and develop a sense of personal competency and positive self-esteem is a productive and profitable workplace.

Leadership involves more than just technical expertise and seniority. Managers are in the challenging position of overseeing potentially large groups of employees, and need to feel comfortable providing guidance and direction on technical, and sometimes not so technical matters. Above all, leadership involves the "people part" of managing and supervising workers.

This training package is designed to train participants to recognize and cultivate characteristics vital to the role of an effective manager, using the Leadership Effectiveness Assessment Device (LEAD-20). Ten of the LEAD-20s characteristics focus on the pragmatic elements of management, whereas the other 10 focus on the "human relations" end of managing people in the workplace.
